The complaint that a “no solicitation” policy would prohibit commerce and free enterprise does not apply to a tax exempt charitable organization. The Music Teachers National Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization, and therefore has a right to have a set of values. Their mission is to advance the value of music study and music making to society and to support the professionalism of music teachers. In education, and I would say especially in music education, there is a necessary relationship between parent, teacher and child that supports the growth and healthy emotional development of the child. Sometimes a music teacher has a student for several years, and the relationship they form influences the student in much the same way as does the relationship with their parents. A Code of Ethics that supports this relationship by discouraging members from interrupting other student/teacher relationships makes sense when the motive is not profit, but education.
