Proposed Consent Agreement In the Matter of Music Teachers National Association, Inc.

Neither teachers in the Greater Rockford (Illinois) Music Teachers Association (GRMTA) nor their students have experienced price-fixing that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleges arose from the now-deleted provision in the Code of Ethics of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) that teachers should not solicit students currently studying other teachers. In the spring of 2012, a survey of GRMTA’s members revealed a $28 difference in half-hour lesson rates charged by the teacher with the lowest rates and the teacher with the highest, with no consistency of rates among the rest of our members within these extremes. Neither MTNA nor the Illinois State Music Teachers Association nor GRMTA has ever told members what rates to charge their students. Rather, GRMTA members who run independent music studios charge tuition rates at whatever level they want to charge. Sincerely, Susan Lipnick President, Greater Rockford (Illinois) Music Teachers Association Member of Board of Directors, Illinois State Music Teachers Association
