I was very upset to learn from my professional organization, MTNA, that we had been targeted and harassed for our professional policy statement as limiting competition in our profession. Music teachers across the United States struggle to make a living, to compete with all the demanding sports, dance, school programs, electronics, and myriads of other events and activities which call to our youth. The value of music study in the lives of developing young people is indisputable, yet we are constantly challenged to show its value, and to somehow persuade students to spend their limited time and resources on music lessons and study. We band together to support each other and to educate ourselves on how to best accomplish these worthy goals. Our policy statement has been a guide and reminder to treat others as we would like to be treated-with respect and common courtesy. I have been a music teacher for 40 years, and have never heard of a problem with this policy. Yet now, we are forced to spend our time, money, and attention fixing this 'problem'. We have many issues to address which are real-I would respectfully suggest that you also address real problems and leave MTNA to deal with its own challenges. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response. Marcia Benson
