It is my opinion that the MTNA code of ethics needs to contain the provision to not solicit students from other music studios. There are other professions such as doctors and lawyers which also abide by this ethic. Foremost it is a professional courtesy to fellow teachers and fosters goodwill among teachers in a geographic area. Also, it discourages slanderous talk and bullying against other teachers which may be initiated in the course of trying to lure students away from another studio. It puts the choice of purchase fairly in the hands of the consumers as the teacher's energies will be focused on marketing themselves and the activities of their studio to the public which will encourage fair and friendly competition rather than prevent it.
