Thank you for your work on this important issue. Unhealthful food can be addictive, and unhealthful food habits can create problems our children may struggle with for a whole lifetime. Shame on our culture if we give more influence to industry-profiteers who prey on helpless children than we do to teaching our children how to live more healthful, productive lives. I limited my children's viewing when they were young to a few hours of public television a day, which was the only way to control the extreme influence of food advertising. Television advertising is effective in changing behavior, that's why it's used---it sells the wrong kind of foods and bad eating habits to our children. It's our job to protect them until they're old enough to make their own good decisions, and we shouldn't have to turn off the TV or stick to public television to do so, especially when television itself is so addictive, and when our cultural choices, values and policies work against parents in teaching good habits, decisions and attitudes to our children. We re a nation of fat people for good reason: we don t trust our own common sense, but instead give too much influence to those who stand to gain when our children learn to make unwise and unhealthful food choices. Sensible media regulation, preferably combined with a solid public media campaign re-introducing such old-fashioned concepts as gluttony will help parents do their jobs better. Americans are becoming the laughing stock of the rest of the world, which sees Americans as pigs greedily ruining our own health, and that of our children, because we privilege greedy profiteers over our own children, and their hard-pressed parents, none of whom have the deep pockets or legal clout of the food corporations and advertising industry. The airwaves are ours. They belong to the American people, for the good of the American people. They don't belong to corporations who want to market things that will harm our children. And if there's ever any doubt in the matter, please, let's give the benefit of that doubt to our children and parents, not to greedy corporations who already have all the power, and already use it to their advantage.
