As a former faculty of two university Schools of Music, I am now an independent piano teacher. I've never solicited students from teachers whom I respect. Beginning teachers may not know it is not ethical to recruit students by criticizing another teacher or by offering cheaper rates. The MTNA code of ethics is an attempt to educate these teachers. MTNA is not a business. An independent teacher is in business only for himself. Neither is capable of restricting entrance into the profession or preventing competition. The mission of MTNA,150 years old,is to improve teaching of music and opportunities for musicians. The MTNA code of ethics was added in an attempt to educate beginners and those who may not have an ethical sense already developed. Some means must be permitted for this professional organization to continue its educational aims and educate these beginners. Can you give this permission?
