Preliminary Proposed Nutrition Principles to Guide Industry Self-Regulatory Efforts, Project No. P094513
nutrition principles: As a mother of two children,a school volunteer, and a member of a school board in an urban district of 21,000 students, I am most concerned about food marketed to children. It astounds me the growing number of obese children who constantly snack on nutitionally void, chemical laden, overly processed food. Nutritious food is that food closest to its origins and not devoid of any naturally found vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and any other naturally occurring compounds our human bodies need. Food that is addictive, saturated with sugar, salt and/or fat, and overly processed changes childrens' tastebuds, making them averse to foods containing naturally occurring nutrients. A child who dines primarily on hotdogs, chips, goldfish crackers and pop, for example will reject carrots and an apple. definitions of marketing targeted to children and adolescents: advertising on children's television stations for nutritionally devoid food, vending machines in schools, bright colored crazy looking cartoon figures on cereal boxes lining whole grocery isles, Ronald McDonald in schools or children's events, These are just a few that should be greatly reduced or eliminated before our nation's citizens become irreversibly unhealthy.
