16 CFR Part 423 - Trade Regulation Rule on Care Labeling of Textile Wearing Apparel and Certain Piece Goods (the “Care Labeling Rule”), Project No. R511915
Care labels need to have words on them, not just symbols. Relying on symbols is risky because not everyone has a clear understanding of their meaning which leads to errors and ruined garments. The FTC needs to recognize that there are alternative solvents to perc and hydrocarbon and include these on care labels as options. As a GreenEarth cleaner, I would like to see a symbol designated for the greenearth process on care labels. Wet cleaning should be prefaced by the word professional so that consumers can distinguish between a garment that needs to be taken to a professional wet cleaner and one that can be washed at home in a regular washing machine. A label that only says wet clean will give people the impression that they can clean the garment by themselves.
