The FTC should ban the public use of facial recognition (and associated) technologies. Consumers are not asking that these technologies be implemented and their use is a clear invasion of privacy. While facial recognition technologies would clearly benefit advertising companies and law enforcement, they are essentially institutional digital stalking and offer a great potential for abuse and misuse. Anonymity is an essential component of democracy--it allows people to express their views and beliefs without fear of repercussion. The FTC has not made consumer privacy a serious priority and thus our anonymity has been steadily eroded by those wishing to buy and sell our personal data and public image. Please take a stand for our privacy and ban the public use of facial recognition technology.
