FTC Workshop: Debt Collection 2.0: Protecting Consumers As Technology Changes, Project No. P114802
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act does not exist in this country. Collection agencies & bill collectors alike feel that robo calls as well as other automated calls (that often fail) constitute as a valid attempt made in order to contact someone regarding collection of a debt. Bill collectors and collection agencies alike also feel that cold calling neighbors, relatives & other persons of possible interest, all fall under the same premise of attempting to collect an outstanding debt. This produces grave concerns for me not just for the fact that the person contacted maybe someone I no longer have included in my life (a relative) but also someone that could potentially use this negative information against me (a neighbor) in such a manner as by distorting the truth & sharing my financial problems with others that know me, where I bank, work & do my daily activities. All companies are not universal in their practices. I have spoken with enough "customer service reps" to know that the only training they receive is to bully their way through the collection system. There is no accountability, no manageable programs to assist those that want to construct a better life to rebuild after a credit downfall (from student loans or otherwise). To collectors, it is All or Nothing. Do as they say because they can get away with anything or fall prey to Collection Agencies. The one thing I beg of you is to help those of us that are truly trying to help ourselves.
