I am an obesity specialist and physician and deal with adult obesity. I am also a parent. I believe in healthy eating and exercise and quality family time. I believe that there are many issues that must be dealt with. The incidence of obesity and fatty liver and the complications arising from these are on the rise. We are seeing diabetes in young children due to obesity. Children have nutritional deficiencies because they are eating and drinking mostly processed artificial foods and less fruits, vegetables and milk. First food should be less processed and less sugary. Sodas and sugary sweetened beverages (including ones that are marketed as health drinks) should not be a part of a child's diet. A food product that has processed meat/cheese/drink and candy is not a lunch. Fast food is not an acceptable way of feeding children and parents need education on proper cooking and food choices. There is no such thing as a kid's meal and kids need to learn to eat real food. There are many adults who do not know how to cook and need to learn to nourish their families. Websites that partner with physicians and dieticians that demonstrate healthy recipes and diet tips are useful to young busy parents. School lunches are heavy on cheese and fatty foods and low on vegetables. Schools that partner with farms and chefs introduce foods that are healthy to kids and that is useful. Additionally physical education programs need more time in the school day and parents need to encourage physical activity during the day instead of computer games.
