In my profession as a music teacher and performer (as I believe it is in other professions) it has always been unethical to solicit students who are studying already with another teacher and even unethical to speak of another teacher in negative terms, even though the facts may be correct. I am extremely disappointed that there is an effort to remove the statement of this ethic in the MTNA's Code of Ethics. Removing it from the Code of Ethics will not make it become ethical, but leaving it in will be a testament to the ethics of those who choose to be members. If someone wants to engage in such practices, MTNA membership is not for them. I am very concerned that the FTC would allow any organization to omit from its Code of Ethics the prohibition against soliciting established patrons from another colleague, and I urge you to reconsider enforcing such an idea.
