Summary of Rights and Notices of Duties under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Project No. P105408
I have done volunteer consumer advocacy work for about 11 years now dealing with credit. The first thing that needs changed is the ability to dispute inquiries. Each inquiry can do anywhere from 1-16 points of damage(yes I have seen them do 16 points worth) yet the credit bureaus no longer allow you to dispute them. If an unauthorized inquiry hits(i.e. identity theft, no permissible purpose, ect) it will do damage to the consumer's credit and there is nothing they can do about it. This is just ridiculous. I have about 15 id theft inquiries on my credit report and they are cost me 30-40 points or more. Secondly, credit bureaus and collection agencies, ect can just verify a debt or information with a credit bureau without even checking to see if the debt is valid. Although this would take more time they really should have to prove it to the credit bureaus or it should be deleted. I also think 30 days is too long to wait for a dispute. When a consumer is waiting for a dispute to finish they often need the credit right away. Then the dispute comes in verified which is not true and they have to wait another 30 days. Finally, collection agencies are reporting debts as open accounts and past due which is completely not true.
