In the Matter of Staples/Essendant, Inc., File No. 1810180
We are told that it is competition that makes capitalism great. We have more than once in our history taken on monopolies for the good of the economy; for the good of the country in the case of the railroads. Consolidation of corporations should be viewed in that light: do they produce a better, possibly less expensive, product? Or do they serve profitability without serving a broader common good?
