In the Matter of Staples/Essendant, Inc., File No. 1810180
Mergers, such as this Staples proposed merger, are most concerning as they are explicitly designed to consolidate market power and reduce competition. Competition has until lately been viewed as the lifeblood of capitalism. However, mergers do limit competition and do put consumers at a disadvantage by reducing choice. It also overall reduces quality by removing that competitive drive which would ostensibly reward better performers. My local Staples has become poorly run, messy, staff unfriendly and inefficient. If we had Office Max here still, I would shop there. Let's not be rewarding and perpetuating this poor performance. I urge the FTC to protect competition by denying this merger application. Thank you for your consideration.
