FTC 16 CFR Part 315 Public Workshop Examining Contact Lens Marketplace And Analyzing Proposed Changes To The Contact Lens Rule
Dear Commission and Public, My sense is that contact lenses are prescription devices which are best used with the benefit of an intact Patient/Doctor relationship. As an eye doctor I have observed the most common reason for serious eye problems are related to poor contact lens care and replacement schedule. I have a vested interest in the health and visual welfare of my patients and if something would ever go wrong they can hold me directly accountable. On-line or third party contact lens sellers, I believe have no vested interest in the patients welfare and are primarily motivated in selling more lenses. There is no way a patient can hold them responsible. I'm am aware of many times patients have told me contact lenses were sold to them after expiration, in one case after 5 years. These sellers also obtain the individuals credit card information and charge them before having a valid prescription. I have come to the conclusion that non doctor sellers of contact lenses have only their profit as a priority compared to doctors who have the patient health and welfare as priority. Sincerely, Michael Antoine, O.D.
