FTC 16 CFR Part 315 Public Workshop Examining Contact Lens Marketplace And Analyzing Proposed Changes To The Contact Lens Rule
Dear Legislators, As an optometry student graduating this May, and as a long-time contact lens user myself, I am constantly impressed by the impact medical contact lenses have on people's lives. With my high prescription, contacts allow me to function well with both eyes to detect conditions and problems with my patient's eyes and general health. However, with that knowledge and experience (even my limited experience as a student!) has come countless examples of contact lens abuse - corneal ulcers that cause permanent vision loss, inflammation of the eyes that must be medicated to resolve, and can even result in other infections that require removal of the eye. Patient safety and education regarding contact lenses and proper fitting is key. In my externship rotations, I have seen the significant amount of paperwork required by small and large practices alike; requiring providers to obtain one more signature may not seem like a large task, but it adds one more step for the patients. As the current process stands, many patients have expressed their frustration with all of the hoops they must jump through, and ease of obtaining contacts online. This seems counterproductive, as the online retailers are not subject to the same requirements as providers while also not conducting a medical evaluation of a medical device. I urge you to consider the importance of facilitating a patient safety-focused process for obtaining CL prescriptions and attending to more investigations of harmful and illegal sales rather than burdening the providers fostering a safer contact lens environment. Thank you for your time and your service. Sincerely, An almost-O.D. wanting patient safety to come above all else
