FTC 16 CFR Part 315 Public Workshop Examining Contact Lens Marketplace And Analyzing Proposed Changes To The Contact Lens Rule
We all need to be accountable for ocular health, and contact lens impact on the ocular surface. Doctors definitely need to make the contact lens Rx accessible, but better regulation of that Rx is imperative. Current Rx verification is horribly flawed, and does nothing to prevent contact lens vendors from substituting prescriptions, and or filling and Rx that is long expired. Eyesight is our most precious sense, and contact lens abuse absolutely can result in vision loss. The annual eye exam is much more that a routine vision check, we can identify life threatening conditions. I have personally identified swollen optic nerve in a 5 year old boy that was a result of a brain aneurysm. This boy was in emergency surgery the next day, which most likely saved his life. Contact lens wearers are significantly more prone to have regular eye exams, which gives the doctors more opportunity to monitor there overall health. It is absolutely proven that those purchasing contacts from online vendors will see their doctor much less, mostly due to the flawed laws and regulatory process that exist. Proactive health is this nations goal, and will save lives and money for everyone. Small changes can make HUGE differences in our patients lives.
