FTC 16 CFR Part 315 Public Workshop Examining Contact Lens Marketplace And Analyzing Proposed Changes To The Contact Lens Rule
Multiple times each day, contact lens patients I see are ordering contacts online. That in itself isn't an issue. What is an issue is patients over filling the prescription, having a contact illegally substituted or having contacts filled without a valid prescription. I recently saw a gentleman for the first time who hadn't had an eye exam in 10 years. He had been buying contacts online without a valid prescription for clues to 10 years. Contacts are classified as a medical device. As I explain to my patients, contacts are a prescription that need to be followed as written, just like any other medications they take. If used improperly, contacts can lead to serious issues, including permanent vision loss. This is the issue we face every day in primary eye care. Passive verification is not working. Active verification must be considered. Thank you. Daniel Gray. OD
