Understanding Competition in U.S. Prescription Drug Markets: Entry and Supply Chain Dynamics
Competion fosters innovation while controlling costs. That is what I learned when I was school. But as companies grow and remove competition by merging and/or locking out competitors the consumer suffers. Our government realized the long ago and anti-trust laws were established. We can already see the effects of light anti-trust enforcement the past few decades. The cost of brand name drugs has escalated as PBM take hugh kick-backs from drug manufactures to increase their own bottom lines, meanwhile, they are eliminating competition in the marketplace by undercutting the small independent pharmacies by reimbursing below cost. Many of these pharmacies serving rural areas are folding under the abuse and leaving their communities without the care of one of the most trusted professionals, the pharmacist. Please stop the mega consolidation in the healthcare arena before we have a one size fits all health care that stifles innovation and leavrs the consumer in a take it or leave it options for their healthcare.
