16 CFR Part 316; CAN-SPAM Rule: Rule Review; Request for Public Comments; Project No. R711010
Once again the United States lags in privacy, anti-spam and anti-identity theft protections for its citizens. I Urge the FTC to take a tiny step toward correcting these deficiencies by at least prohibiting the practice of signing people up to a mailing list without their permission. The burden of stopping unrequested commercial email should not be placed on the victim but rather on the originator of the UCE. It should be a simple matter for reputable companies to send to persons to whom they send commercial email a simple form that asks them to opt-in to continue receiving email and by default removing those who do not reply. The rule also should have teeth in the form of significant penalties for those who continue to violate it.
