Hearing Health and Technology -- Workshop, Project No. P171200
I am a senior citizen who was born with severe hearing loss but not discovered for five years because of ignorance and primitive diagnosis within the medical world in the midcentury. Now the medical world has filled the gaps but it is a difficult science to fit hearing aids to people well, even if one has a doctoral degree in audiology. Imagining OTC accessibility to hearing aids when a medical doctor and an audiologist are required for safety and competence is more than frightening. It is an indication of an irresponsible society and government which could provide a single-payer insurance system for all citizens who need hearing aids, which would create a better society with more people who can contribute fully rather than partially or not at all.
