Hearing Health and Technology -- Workshop, Project No. P171200
I have been wearing hearing aids for almost a quarter century and am deemed a candidate for cochlear implant surgery by Medicare. Impaired hearing is a medical problem. It needs to be treated by professionals--from making the right ear mold to programming the aids by a skilled professional now on computers. This also extends to diagnosing physical problems or a tumor etc., as the source of hearing loss--sometimes different depending upon which ear. Also as in my case, hearing loss can be progressive and even sudden and complete. I am for making hearing aids more affordable but AGAINST selling hearing aids over the counter to unsuspecting consumers. Better would be an effort to get insurance companies involved if that would mean lowering of prices and more consumers able to avail themselves of hearing aids. But not 'over the counter.'
