I am a Hearing Aid Specialist in SC. I am Chairman of the SC state licensing board for hearing aid specialists and President of the South Carolina Hearing Society. I have many concerns with OTC hearing devices. The biggest one being, who is going to see the individuals purchasing to make sure there are no health issues concerning the hearing loss. Something as simple as wax in the ear could be the issue. Other cases could be much more severe and even life threatening, such as a tumor behind the eardrum, which can only be determined with a complete hearing test or going to a Dr. to get an MRI. Who is going to ask the required FDA red flag questions prior to someone getting a hearing device. There are things in place to protect the consumer and this would all be thrown out the door so someone can make a buck at the health expense of the consumer. I feel it is a terrible injustice to the people of our country to not get what is best for them and OTC are not the answer.
