Hearing Health and Technology -- Workshop, Project No. P171200
As a hearing care provider servicing Las Vegas and surrounding areas, I believe I have intimate knowledge of the hearing needs of many of the senior citizens in our community. It is through this experience, that I fully recognize that the majority of my senior citizen patients would have extreme difficulty in dealing with their own hearing loss due to their own technological limitations and understandings. Modern hearing aids absolutely need a sympathetic and understanding hearing care professional to council enable many in our community to hear as well as they can. For the majority of my patients, enabling them to purchase a hearing aids over the counter, will result in massive frustration and most of the time areturn of that hearing aid and I desire to no longer try to improve their communication due to the frustrations they will have experienced by tending to their own hearing. Once somebody become so frustrated that they give up on hearing, they can often miss those very important conversations that are occuring near/at the end of their life. It is an unfortunate and sad experience to watch someone who can't communicate to their family because it is too frustrating try to have a conversation. It is with this understanding, that I do not think selling hearing aids directly to the consumer will amount to a better hearing population. I think it could encourage people to self diagnose and not end up with potential the best hearing that they coul.
