Hearing Health and Technology -- Workshop, Project No. P171200
I am strongly against the over the counter sales of hearing instruments. Harm could be done to the individual if the ear is not evaluated to make sure that an aid is appropriate. Without looking at or evaluating the hearing problem, serious problems can be overlooked. Secondly, most over-the-counter products would not produce comfortable results that fit the prescription of the person's problem. Many people will give up on their hearing problem when a poor result is obtained. Counseling, training and rehabilitation is required for a successful fitting. Low-cost hearing aids are currently available and help is not reach fot people that are above Medicaid levels. Protect the consumer by not repealing the current standards of care.
