Dear Madams and Sirs, As a Doctor of Audiology with more than 30 years in the field, I know too well the number of hearing impaired people we are not reaching. My practice has been very vocal and active in trying different ways to reach those who need hearing aids and are not using them. I whole heartedly agree that we need to search for options that are not yet being offered. I believe that OTC hearing aids would be one way to reach some of those people. However, I believe that we need to bring this into the picture with the consumer's best interest at heart. These products would be best for those with mild hearing loss. As hearing loss progresses, we often start to bring other cognitive issues into the mix. There is a great deal of patient and family counseling that is needed at this time. Ideally, a hearing test should also be performed before ordering any product to determine the actual need and for a visual inspection of the external ear. Please consider restricting the OTC hearing products to those with documented mild hearing loss. Jodi Conter, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
