As a current Optometry student at Western University of Health Sciences, I have become familiar with the negative consequences that can result from a patient improperly using their prescription. It is important for patient safety to have their prescription renewed on a yearly basis because the health and anatomy of the eye can drastically change within a year span. Especially in the case of contacts, the eye is much more susceptible to infection and damage if the contact is not properly suited for the patient. From an outsiders perspective, it can seem that fitting contact lens' is a simple and tedious process, but there are a lot of different factors that optometrists take into consideration regarding the health and safety of the patient that most retailers will neglect to consider. I ask that this this rule does not go into effect for the sake of consumer safety.
