16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
I am director of contact lens service at the University of Minnesota Hospital system and I must say this rule is quite extreme and not at all appropriate. I already give a copy of my patient's contact prescriptions, with encouragement to purchase them wherever they would like. I instruct them on proper and safe purchasing (ie no secondhand, no ebay etc), and I review the necessity of regular contact lens monitoring. I have no profit motivation and simply care that my patients receive healthy care. Them buying contacts online for 10 years straight without seeing me is NOT healthy care and is dangerous to the patient. Putting this signing rule into effect would be a highly unnecessary and time-wasting action. If patients are concerned their doctor is withholding a prescription, why not give them a resource they can get in contact with? Why punish the majority when there are only a minority of cases. Instead of cracking down on this, I would highly suggest that corporations who are filling invalid contact prescriptions be looked into instead.
