I am a practicing optometrist in the Norfolk - Virginia Beach area. I comply with the requirements of the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act (FCLCA) and the corresponding Contact Lens Rule by providing copies of contact lens prescriptions to contact lens wearing patients at the end of the contact lens fitting process. I am saddened that the FTC is not better addressing the issue at hand when it comes to online contact lens purchases. Contact lenses are a medical device that a prescribing doctor must deem safe for the patient to be wearing. In order to insure this, the patient must be evaluated by the prescribing doctor regularly, and be provided with an update prescription by the doctor. The oppose the rule where I would have to have yet another document signed by my patients due to the online companies selling contact lenses wishing to fulfill their needs and put the patients best interest behind theirs. This does not address the issue of guaranteeing patient safety. It is up to us as doctors to advocate for our patients. This rule does not do that.
