This is an abdication of responsibility on the part of the FTC if they allow Car Max to purposely misrepresent the condition of the cars they are selling. In simple pre-Trumpian language it's called lying and the FTC has a responsibility to not allow that kind of abuse of language to be used to victimize unsuspecting consumers. There are real consequences to allowing Car Max to lie about the safety of cars they sell. In fact they should be required to perform safety recall work before being allowed to sell a car or at a very minimum to inform buyers that there are outstanding safety recalls on the car they are buying. It's no wonder consumers feel so under attack, they are. When government agencies stop working for the people whose taxes pay their salaries and start being advocates for the very businesses whose practices they are tasked with overseeing we see the misplaced anger that has put in place politicians who ironically will do even more to undermine the protections that government should provide.
