16 CFR Part 23, Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries; Project No. G711001
I am opposed to excluding cast items from the handmade category of jewelry. As a jewelry artist, I hand carve wax models to then be cast. Wax models, carved by hand, can take hours, even days to create. Because multiple copies may be cast, does not diminish the fact that I created the original model by hand. Almost every jewelry artist uses components that are mass produced. If cast items are not allowed in the "handmade" category, then every artist must hand make every component they use in their creations. Metals are cast in molds to create the base components that are then rolled in mills to create sheet metal & wire. If these metals are cast first, then they must not be considered "hand made". Please consider carefully, because, if you exclude cast items from the handmade category, there is almost no jewelry that can be considered handmade. Thank you.
