FTC to Host Public Workshop Examining the U.S. Auto Distribution System Workshop Will Explore Competition, State Regulations, and Emerging Trends in the Industry, Project No. P131202
In my opinion the laws prohibiting direct sales by auto manufacturers are an outdated solution to a problem that no longer exist. And at this point they serve only to protect the interests of the auto dealers not the general public as originally intended. Worse, they are seriously affecting the ability of Tesla Motors to do business. Public policy at this point should be helping Tesla not hindering it. We will not solve the climate change problem without electric cars. And electric cars will not succeed if Tesla fails. Yes, someday there may be other competitors to Tesla. And that should be encouraged. But not by restricting Tesla for the sole benefit of the legacy auto dealers.
