FTC to Host Public Workshop Examining the U.S. Auto Distribution System Workshop Will Explore Competition, State Regulations, and Emerging Trends in the Industry, Project No. P131202
I think automobile manufacturers should be able to sell directly to consumers, and consumers should be able to shop directly from any automobile manufacturer. That's what a free market is about. If the automobile manufacturer can offer a better deal by cutting out the middle man (dealer) then they should be allowed to do so. If direct selling were allowed in all states, then the dealers will have to step up their game to add any value to the transaction. The dealers have been protected for too long. So it will be good for everyone, especially the consumer.
