FTC to Host Public Workshop Examining the U.S. Auto Distribution System Workshop Will Explore Competition, State Regulations, and Emerging Trends in the Industry, Project No. P131202
I believe that the state of the automobile industry has created a monopoly within our country. Laws have been put into effect that make it nearly impossible for the consumer to make any personal choices. As a consumer I don't have the option to buy a car like I do a cell phone, a mattress, or even a house. In most states as a business entrepreneur I don't even have the option to open a car dealership in competition of another because of the monopolistic laws that keep me from doing so. We force the public to buy a "new car" from a flawed institution and then if problems arise I have to return to a certified dealer to have any repairs done. This is a cyclical trend that has to come to an end. Companies like Tesla are selling directly to the customer which enables them to lower prices and build brand loyalty. I'm not forced to go to one grocery store to buy food for my family and I shouldn't be forced to buy my cars from one dealer. Its facts like these that kept me from buying a new car this year and instead investing my money into a new bicycle that I commute to work with five days a week.
