I am strongly in favor of direct sales by auto manufacturers. I allows the consumer to communicate their concerns directly with the manufacturer. I have experienced serious problems with my BMW that remain unresolved because the dealership acts as a shield for the company, preventing communication. Dealerships create a climate of uncertainty with regard to pricing and this has resulted in the fact that auto dealers are the least trusted business in the community. The best way to protect the consumer is to require that auto manufacturers cooperate with and support independent service and repair facilities on an equal basis with their own "company service centers". This is where consumers can expect to benefit from competition in the market place.
