FTC to Host Public Workshop Examining the U.S. Auto Distribution System Workshop Will Explore Competition, State Regulations, and Emerging Trends in the Industry, Project No. P131202
Car dealerships are an important part of our economy. But like most other parts of our economy, they should not be unduly protected if they fail to deliver value to their customers. We are in the Internet age today and car manufacturers should have the choice at how they want to sell their wares, direct to consumer or through a network of dealers. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages and it the basis of our free market system to determine which approach is best. Consumers will choose to go through the system that delivers the best value. It is certainly a different day and age then when regulations requiring the use of dealer networks was first enacted.
