FTC to Host Public Workshop Examining the U.S. Auto Distribution System Workshop Will Explore Competition, State Regulations, and Emerging Trends in the Industry, Project No. P131202
We live in the San Francisco Bay Area (also known as Silicon Valley) and in our family we've purchased 11 different new vehicles in the last 15 years -- 1 Volkswagen, 3 Lexus, 4 BMW, 1 Porsche, and 2 Tesla. So we have lots of experience with dealers, dealer associations, auto manufacturers, and Tesla's direct to consumer model --- both buying new vehicles and trading them in. We've been treated fairly by some of the dealers we've worked with, but those interactions have been a minority. For our last 4 german car purchases we've had to travel out of town to Monterey, CA -- outside our local market -- due to the way we have been treated by 4 different BMW and Porche dealers in Silicon Valley. There is so much money in our area and so few "production slots" that dealers play games of delay and grossly misrepresent their role in ordering and delivery in order to keep more clueless customers local -- even though we could have the same custom ordered vehicle produced and shipped to us sooner if ordered through a dealer just outside our local market. Even with that dealer, we had extremely unpleasant experiences paying cash for our vehicles. The dealer insisited on having a finance guy work with us even though we were paying cash. That guy tried to push $1000 wax jobs on us, and made me look bad to my sister to whom I was buying the vehicle as a present. After these experiences, we are never buying a new car from a dealer again --- only Teslas from now on. We love everything about the Tesla order and delivery experience. Completely no-pressure and very sensitive to our needs. Service has been second to none as well, hence we have traded in 2 of our German cars for Teslas now. Not having to go to the local German car stealerships for service has been great. So we love the Tesla model and we hope the Federal government will ensure that we continue to enjoy it and that more customers in more states will have the option to experience a dealer-free model.
