Contact lens safety for my patients is my utmost priority. It is critical that contact lenses fit my patients appropriately, that they are able to insert and remove their contact lenses and understand the importance of caring and handling their contact lenses appropriately. This is important to prevent microbial keratitis, an infection due to a bacteria or virus that could potentially lead to loss of vision, blindness, and the inability to work and / or drive independently. In my practice at the University of California, Davis, I have the opportunity to see patients from around the world where contact lenses are not regulated. Some of these patients obtain knowledge online about how to wear and care for their contact lenses. As a doctor, I along with my staff teach my patients how to prevent sight threatening loss of vision. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Melissa Barnett, OD, FAAO, FSLS
