There are many instances in my practice where patients come in with eye infections and corneal neovascularization due to contact lens wear. At times, the patients have no idea that contact lenses have damaged the health of their eye. As a result, I need to educate and eventually fit such patients with contact lenses of certain parameters and lens materials. Regular examinations are required to ensure safety with these lenses. When contact lens prescriptions are allowed to be extended, there will definitely cases where that annual examination to renew a prescription is missed, and irreversible damage be have occurred. Please do not change the accessibility for consumers to obtain contact lenses. It is us doctors that are personally invested in our patients; we interact with them and we care for them. Therefore, we should be allowed to write annual prescriptions with specific parameters and lens types.
