Contact lenses are medical devices that have great potential for abuse or misuse. If improperly fitted, they may cause vision threatening complications. It is of the uptmost importance that the proper material, curvature, size, and power of lenses be specified by a trained professional. The annual or biennial expiration date of prescriptions is also immensely important to ensure proper vision for all consumers. Vision and proper sight can change drastically and affects more than just the patient wearing the vision correction. Imagine a patient whose vision gradually deteriorates, so slowly that he does not notice, to a point where driving is unsafe. Annual checkups can prevent vision-related accidents from occurring.
