Contact lenses are a medical device used to improve a patient vision, as such it requires at least annual eye examinations, to ensure that the ocular surface is healthy enough to accommodate such device. Far too many times encounter contact lens patients who because of their disregard and respect for this device present to my office with severe bacterial ulcers, papillary conjunctivitis and contact lens related red eyes. For example a right fitted contact lens would feel very comfortable to the patient yet cause severe irritation and only an eye care provide can assess that. Online retailers would not be able to assess ocular health. In addition an online retailer cannot decide which contact lens material is more beneficial to a patient because that is determined based on each patient needs and ocular health and such decision should not be made by unqualified and untrained personnel. Thank you
