Contact Lenses are treated as a medical device, as such, we need to have policies that will ensure that they are provided to consumers in a safe manner. That includes a 1 year expiration date so that patients are properly examined and fitted yearly. A significant number of patients do not wear contact lenses as prescribed to them, this can result in serious risks for their ocular health, such as infections and/or blindness. By extending expiration dates, eye doctors will not see their patients timely to ensure contacts are worn safely. Compliance is a major issue for many contact lens wearers, if they are wearing contact lenses longer than the recommended time frame or sleeping with their contacts or improperly caring for the contacts, that can result in serious eye condition.
