I have had a few patients who purchased cosmetic contact lenses from kiosks in the mall without a valid prescription. This resulted in bacterial corneal ulcers, which required several office visits, at least one if not two prescription eye drops, staying out of contact lenses for at least a week, and discomfort. Contact lenses are indeed medical devices which need to be prescribed and monitored by licensed eye care providers. Improper use of contact lenses results in decreased productivity and possibly permanent reduction in visual acuity.
