16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
The Contact Lens Rule needs to be updated. Many companies have taken liberties and don't follow this rule as closely as they should. They regularly allow a supply of contact lenses even when the person has an outdated prescription, and no recent eye exam. This could put the person in danger of losing their vision, because studies have shown that contact lens wearers are a high risk group, and are as much as SEVEN times likely to have an eye infection. They need to be monitored on a regular basis. Also, contact lenses vary quite a bit between brands and types. Companies want a generic form of prescription, which would never work. It would create a lot of issues that would result in less efficient medical care. The time is now to update this archaic and flawed rule. Sincerely, Andrew Huttenhoff, O.D.
