Verifications come during and after hours by robocall forcing staff to drop what they are doing in direct patient care in order to attend to writing down the information being quickly given by a computer verbally. Sometimes the contact phone number for response is cut off or not even given. Faxes are often delivered by online contact lens suppliers after office hours on the weekend, sometimes these are originated by unscrupulous individuals not even patients at our office or companies looking to fill known expired prescriptions. We receive requests from companies after denials by our office 5-6 times to fill expired prescriptions for the same individual. We receive calls every week asking us to extend prescriptions or change to different lenses we haven't even evaluated on patients. The burden is almost overwhelming to keep patients from harm! Robocalls should be outlawed at the very least. Faxes should be sent only during office hours for verification. Why don't we use this passive verification for narcotics? Why, because it is NOT safe!!! Patients should be free to obtain their contact lenses where they choose. Doctors and contact lens suppliers should be held to high ethical standards. Companies with huge budgets should not be able to blatantly lie when advertising on television, "Drive to your doctors, order your contacts, pay twice as much, wait a long time, drive back to pick them up!" I don't know of any doctors charging twice as much for contact lenses or conducting their businesses in a way to inconvenience their patients in this fashion. Their practices would not exist if their policies were this bad. Counterfitting of contacts is a problem when they are not coming from authorized distributors. Halloween contacts are also a problem and widely sold thoughout the USA without a prescription. Any one regulating this? Rethink the rules not in favor of being bought by the highest bidder. The only reason to have passive verification is public officials are being bought and paid for by lobbyists! How about doing your jobs! How about the safety of the American public?
