It is my genuine and strong belief that allowing patients to pick their own contact lens materials and having their eyes examined every 5 years is a great disservice to the patients and will result in more contact lens eye related complications than ever before. Serious issues that could have been avoided with proper fitting and eye health examinations. contact lenses are a medical device to be taken seriously. Patients need a thorough verification process, and making sure patients come in for annual exams and annual prescription renewal is the only way to achieve that. Additionally, fitting a patient with the best possible contact lens for him/her is vital to patient satisfaction I have several patients which had to try several contact lenses before finding the best fit/comfort/vision for him/her. I have found patients who do not come in for their yearly eye health exam, abuse their contact lenses and end up coming in as an emergency rather than for a routine visit. Very likely at that routine visit a small problem would have been caught before it became an emergency. This will cause the health care industry to spend more money on fixing problems which could have been avoided.
