16 CFR Part 315; Agency Information Collection Activities: Review; Comment Request; Contact Lens Rule: FTC Project No. R511995
Sirs/Madam: For years now we have been getting telephone requests from contact lens resalers leaving messages on our answering machine after hours. It takes so much time to listen and re-listen to the requests and many are made on the weekend when we are not working. If we don't respond within 8 business hours they fill the prescription for contact lenses anyway. Many patients want to forego the necessary yearly exams to save money and yet most of my contact lens problems we encounter each week in my office are related to patient's being way overdue for timely re-checking. Contact lenses rest on the eye's surface which is the most delicate structure in our bodies. It is mandatory that contact lens patients have yearly exams to insure good corneal health. EVERY SINGLE CORNEAL ULCER I HAVE TREATED HAS BEEN A CONTACT LENS ABUSER.. WEARING LENSES TOO LONG, GETTING LENSES VIA THE INTERNET WITHOUT PERIODIC EXAMINATIONS, WEARING DIRTY LENSES AND NOT COMING IN SOON ENOUGH WHEN THEIR EYES ARE RED AND IRRITATED. Contact lens resalers just want to sell lenses. They do not care about the health of the patient's eyes. Some contact lenses re-sellers allow the patients to purchase lens quantities far in excess of what is needed for normal prescription wear usage; IE: buying 50 boxes per eye when 4 or 8 boxes would comprise a yearly supply!! PLEASE ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. Thank you. John C. Spaeth, O.D.
