As an eye care provider, I feel more oversight of the online contact lens sellers is needed. Contact lenses are a medical device, and if misused can cause complications that may lead to blindness. Contact lenses need to be regulated with the seriousness of such, they should not be treated as a commodity. Positive verification should be required before lenses are shipped; if the doctor office does not reply in time, that should not count as positive verification. We have had many problems due to the online ordering of contact lenses. Patients report to us that they have received contact lenses ordered online, of which our office did not receive a prescription verification request. We have patients who have received the incorrect prescription due to online companies shipping lenses out without verification. Many online companies do not have live people for our office to reach if there is a problem with the prescription, and when we try to contact the online company, we find the contact lenses have already been shipped. There is also a problem if patients putting in the incorrect doctor's information, it is impossible to verify the prescription but the lenses still get sent. This is harmful to the health and vision of the public and more safeguards are needed when the risk is blindness.
