Unscrupulous vendors fill contact lenses as they see fit. I have had them switch parameters, brands, powers, anything to make their sale. THIS IS NOT OKAY - the wrong lens can damage the patient's eye, and we spend a significant amount of time fitting these medical devices to insure their safety. Further, as my office is not open Fridays, they simply wait and fax my office after close of business Thursday, knowing I will not be in the office to approve or (more importantly) disapprove their verification request within 8 business hours. They claim they cannot track when my office is open or closed, but they manage to run multi million dollar businesses that require attention to detail? PLEASE. I have always given the patient their prescription, but I do expect it to be filled as written. What needs to be fixed is patients being allowed to purchased multiple years worth of lenses from the same (YES, this happens) or multiple vendors. Its time for contact lenses sales to be limited to the number of lenses prescribed, with no substitutions without the fitting doctor's approval.
